Strutting With Pride!

The modeling industry has evolved, but there’s still a lot of work to be done in terms of diversity, representation, and inclusivity. If you’re a Trans model or part of the LGBTQIA+ community, it’s time to claim your space on the runway, in photoshoots, and in the hearts of fashion enthusiasts around the world. Here’s your sassy mentor-approved guide on how to approach the industry and thrive unapologetically as a Trans or LGBTQIA+ model. In other words show up and show out!

1. Own Your Story and Your Identity

Authenticity (noun) the genuine expression of one’s identity, beliefs, and values without fear of judgement or discrimination. The modeling world is all about uniqueness, and the most important thing you can do is OWN who you are. There is no one like you! Whether you’re Trans, Non-binary, or part of the LGBTQIA+ spectrum, your identity is not something to hide—it’s your superpower! Where would the world be without it’s unicorns? Embrace it fully. There’s strength in vulnerability, and being open about your journey will make you even more relatable and real to both brands and audiences. You and you alone know who you really are so it’s time to tell your story as only you can.

2. There Are Agencies that Celebrate Diversity

You can’t just go anywhere and expect to be celebrated for your uniqueness. The good news is, there are agencies that are progressive and dedicated to representing marginalized communities. Our team is here and equipped to steer you in the right direction. We have done our research and targeted agencies that actively seek out diversity in all forms, from gender identity to sexual orientation. Agencies that pride themselves on being inclusive will be your greatest ally in navigating the industry. And yes those tattoos and piercings can stay!

Agencies with diverse portfolios that champion LGBTQIA+ and Trans models are out there. Don’t settle for anything less than an agency that respects and amplifies your true self. Remember: if they’re not celebrating you, they’re not the right fit! And as you know fit is everything in the industry!

3. Network, Network, Network!

Alright, guys & dolls, listen up! Let’s work the system.  Let’s not forget the age old  classic truth: “It’s not what you know, but who you know.” And kidz, as a Trans or LGBTQIA+ model, networking is what you need to do! Get out there and start scouting events, fashion shows, and community events that speak to your soul—places where you can mingle with the right crowd: other models, photographers, designers, and agents who actually get you. Eventbrite? Oh, that’s your new BFF—use it to find those events that’ll get you the spotlight you deserve. And let’s not forget the power of social media, darling! Instagram, Twitter, TikTok—these are your stages, so show off that style, that personality, and that undeniable individuality that’ll have people talking. Now go out there and werk it!

Collaborating with photographers or artists who are LGBTQIA+ or who have experience working with trans models can also give you a sense of community and support. Don’t be afraid to reach out—sometimes, the best opportunities come from simply sending a message. For Us By Us…….

4. That Portfolio should Reflect Your Authenticity

Your portfolio is your visual résumé, your calling card for the industry, make sure it screams you. A portfolio that reflects your personality, confidence, and you want to catch the eye of the right clients, the ones that get it and you. Don’t shy away from expressing yourself through different styles, whether it’s high fashion, editorial, or commercial looks. So when you come to the Studio bring who you are in those garment bags not who you think we want to see! Make sure to include shots that showcase your personality, your charisma, and the unique aspects of who you are. Diversity in your photos will show that you can represent a variety of brands and products.

And don’t forget to include your story in your portfolio. Highlighting your journey as a trans or LGBTQIA+ model can set you apart, adding depth and dimension to your images.

5. Don’t Let Rejection Define You

Let’s be real: the modeling world can be tough. Rejection happens to everyone, but it can hit harder when you’re in a marginalized community. Don’t let it deter you. Let every “no” be a stepping stone to your ultimate “yes.” Understand that the industry is changing, and while there may be challenges, there are also a ton of opportunities for models who are breaking boundaries.

Channel that frustration into determination, and keep moving forward. When one door closes, another opens. Keep the faith, keep your chin high, and never let someone’s narrow-mindedness make you question your worth.

6. Educate, Advocate, and Lead by Example

By stepping into the modeling industry as a trans or LGBTQIA+ model, you’re not just doing it for yourself—you’re doing it for the future of inclusive representation. Use your platform to educate others, advocate for your community, and lead by example. Whether you’re posting about LGBTQIA+ rights, gender fluidity, or mental health, your voice matters. You are an inspiration for others who are on the same journey, and your influence can spark real change in the fashion world.

Take advantage of social media to amplify important messages, and don’t be afraid to push boundaries. Your presence in the industry will pave the way for future generations of models, creating space for them to express themselves authentically.

Final Thoughts:

The world of modeling is not just for the “traditional” face anymore—it’s for everyone. Trans models, LGBTQIA+ models, and anyone who feels marginalized now have more opportunities than ever to succeed in the industry. By staying true to yourself, networking strategically, and building an authentic portfolio, you can break down barriers and be part of the wave of change sweeping through the fashion world.

Keep shining bright, keep being bold, and keep loving yourself unapologetically. The world needs to see you—and trust me, honey, you’ve got what it takes to leave your mark on this fabulous industry. Go get ‘em!
