My Brutally Honest Advice for New and Aspiring Fashion Models

What’s Irving Serving?

Let me save you time, money, and a little bit of heartbreak: the modeling industry is not what Instagram sold you. It’s not constant glam, free trips, and brand deals falling into your lap. It’s a business—one that runs on rejection, timing, and very specific looks. If you’re stepping into this world, you need more than a pretty face. You need strategy, patience, and thick skin.

First things first: stop spending money like it’s a requirement to “get started.” If someone tells you that you need to pay thousands for photos, classes, or showcases just to be seen, that’s your cue to pause. Real agencies don’t charge upfront fees to sign you. They make money when you make money. You can start with a great portfolio— pictures with natural light, simple outfits, no heavy makeup, your t-shirt & jeans look. That’s what agencies actually want to see. Not over-edited, overly styled photos that hide what you really look like.

Second, rejection is the job. Not a part of it—the job. You can have the right height, the right look, the right attitude, and still hear “no” over and over again. Why? Because sometimes they have already booked someone similar. Sometimes you’re not what the client needs that day. It’s rarely personal, but it will feel personal if you let it. If every “no” shakes your confidence, this industry will wear you out fast.

Let’s talk about effort. Saying you want to model and actually pursuing it are two different things. Are you submitting to agencies consistently? Are you following up? Are you keeping your look updated? Or are you waiting to be “discovered” while posting selfies? Be honest. This industry rewards people who move with intention, not just aesthetics.

Also, not everyone is your mentor. Be careful who you take advice from. If their main goal is to sell you something, their advice is going to lead you right back to their checkout page. A real mentor like myself will guide you toward opportunities, not transactions.

Now here’s the part people don’t like to hear: not everyone is going to make it in fashion modeling. And that’s okay. There are different lanes—commercial, lifestyle, fitness, e-commerce. Sometimes the win isn’t runway in Paris; it’s consistent, paid work that fits your look. Learn where you belong instead of forcing yourself into a space that doesn’t fit.

And finally—confidence. Not the loud, performative kind. The quiet kind that says, “I know who I am, and I’m not going to beg for validation.” That’s the energy that carries. That’s what books.

So if you’re serious about modeling, take this as your reset: stop chasing the illusion, start moving with intention, and protect your time and your money. Because in this industry, the smartest model isn’t just the one who looks the part—it’s the one who understands the game.
