Mental Health in a Rejection-Based Industry

What’s Irving Serving?

Alright, everyone—come in close, because this is a conversation the industry loves to avoid, but we’re not doing that here. Let’s talk about mental health in a rejection-based industry, because no matter your age, gender identity, body type, background, or where you are in your journey, this industry can test you if you let it.

Welcome to a space where you can show up fully as yourself—confident, prepared, and ready—and still hear nothing back. No call, no email, no explanation. Just silence. And if you’re not grounded, that silence can start turning into self-doubt. But let’s get one thing clear: rejection in this industry is rarely personal—it’s about fit, timing, and client preference. It doesn’t define your value, your beauty, or your potential.

Now, yes, it feels personal. You’re putting your face, your presence, your identity out there. So when you don’t get selected, it can feel like you weren’t enough. But here’s the truth: you are not your bookings, your callbacks, or your follower count. This industry thrives on variety, and what isn’t right for one opportunity may be exactly what another client is searching for.

Let’s talk about comparison, because social media can be a whole trap if you’re not mindful. You’ll see people booking campaigns, walking runways, or getting signed, and think you’re falling behind. But you’re not seeing their full story—the rejections, the waiting, the networking, the timing. Everyone’s path looks different, and there is space for all kinds of looks, identities, and experiences in this industry. Stay focused on your journey.

Now here’s where your power really comes in: boundaries. You are allowed to say no to shoots that don’t align with you, to people who don’t respect you, to spaces that don’t feel safe or inclusive. Your comfort, your identity, and your well-being matter. Protecting your peace is part of being a professional, not a weakness.

So Kidz, let me make this clear as day, it is so, so very important to have a life outside of modeling! Have passions, relationships, and routines that ground you in who you are beyond the industry. Because if your self-worth is tied only to bookings or validation from others, it can become overwhelming very quickly. You deserve balance.

Rest, rest, rest. You don’t have to chase every opportunity or constantly prove yourself. Take those breaks, resetting, and prioritizing your mental health is part of long-term success—not something that holds you back.

This is what I want you to take with you: be resilient, but gentle with yourself. Be driven, but stay grounded. Be open to growth, but never at the expense of who you are. This industry may involve rejection, but your confidence, identity, and worth are not up for debate.

Stay rooted in yourself, keep showing up, and remember—there is room for you exactly as you are.
